Growth Mindsets!

Look at these AMAZING KIDS !  Let's work together to foster their growth mindset development! Often we mean very well and say things like, "You're a natural!" and "Aren't you smart." Or "I was never good at math, that's probably where you get it." All of these comments can actually work against our intentions and create a fixed mindset = No matter what, these are my skills, you have it or you don't. I was born this way, no use trying. They don't perceive what they did that went well or not, and end up not trying anything new or challenging themselves for fear of not being "smart" anymore. Instead use effort praise, strategy praise, or persistence praise. We want to build Growth Mindsets! A person with a growth mindset realizes that with practice, or a change of thinking they can improve.  ( Mindsets for Parents , Ricci and Lee p 38-45) These seem pretty intertwined, but here is a good start. Effort Praise:

Walk-A-Thon

Families, We had our kick off assembly for the 3rd Annual DES " Rock the Walk " on Friday! Our very own Finley sang a song with his brother and dad to start us rocking it! Your child brought home an envelope with more information. The events will take place on Friday, September 28th. Everyone will participate during school AND  be invited to come back with families and supporters at the Saugatuck HIGH SCHOOL Football Stadium 5:30-7pm . Before then, students can gather pledges using the provided pledge card &/or online service https://www.thegetmovincrew.com/ . These pledges are simply for participation rather than distance. This is a great event for families and 100% of the funds raised go toward making our kids school experience a healthier one! This includes such things as 3rd grade swim lessons, screen free week, the school garden and more. See the envelope for more details! Your student can bring slips and $ back to school on Friday 9/14, Friday 9/21, and Fr

A Great First Week!

We are off to a great start! This is a fantastic group of students and we are already building a sense of community. We will continue to build onto the routine over the next few weeks, adding things little by little. This year we will also be working on establishing a growth mindset. Creative Group Challenge

The directions for this challenge was to use the 5 pipe cleaners and 1 sheet of tin foil to create something together with their group of 3 students. Students made some impressive creations, and had a lot of fun. We learned about cooperation and compromise. I loved the camaraderie that resulted! Click photo for more images! PLEASE REMEMBER: Do not post on other social media. THANK YOU!

Awesome First Day of 2nd Grade!

We had a great day today settling into second grade. We sorted and labeled our supplies, got to know each other with some games, and went to P.E. and Music for the first time. Here are a few things to remember as we continue our first week: 1) PLEASE complete the Powerschool update right away . This is very IMPORTANT to have current phone numbers etc. in case of emergency. Also, return the back to school folders with completed paperwork ASAP. Tomorrow would be FANTASTIC, by Wednesday if needed.  2) It is HOT, if your child has a water bottle at home feel free to send it. We have water in the classroom. 3) If you are able, please send a snack each day with your child's name on it. We will be having a mid morning snack daily. The morning is longer for second graders and it helps them stay focused and reenergize. 4) Mrs. Gust reminded students of recess and some general rules today. Please leave toys and electronic devices at home. Our lockers do not lock. 5) A change of cl
