Awesome First Day of 2nd Grade!

We had a great day today settling into second grade. We sorted and labeled our supplies, got to know each other with some games, and went to P.E. and Music for the first time. Here are a few things to remember as we continue our first week:

1) PLEASE complete the Powerschool update right away. This is very IMPORTANT to have current phone numbers etc. in case of emergency. Also, return the back to school folders with completed paperwork ASAP. Tomorrow would be FANTASTIC, by Wednesday if needed.

2) It is HOT, if your child has a water bottle at home feel free to send it. We have water in the classroom.

3) If you are able, please send a snack each day with your child's name on it. We will be having a mid morning snack daily. The morning is longer for second graders and it helps them stay focused and reenergize.

4) Mrs. Gust reminded students of recess and some general rules today. Please leave toys and electronic devices at home. Our lockers do not lock.

5) A change of clothes for those just in case times (paint spills, mud puddles...) will be beneficial to have in the student's locker. You may also consider having extra gym shoes in lockers as needed. They are required for P.E. on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Otherwise students will borrow them from Mr. Cochran. I also advise closed toe shoes for the playground.

Thanks again for all of the supplies to start the year, and your support! I was so proud of our class today. They already earned 3 paper "gum balls" for entering quietly after lunch, listening, and cooperating as a class. The students also came up with amazing responses for how they want to be treated by each other. Including...

  • The Golden Rule: Be kind! Treat others how you want to be treated (and how they want to be treated) and they will be nice to you.
  • Share and take turns
  • Help each other
  • Be quiet and listen to each other
What a great start! See you tomorrow!

PHOTOS!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Here are the leprechaun drawings students made on Friday!  We had a great field trip to the VanAndel Science Institute on Tuesday.  The students worked hard as engineers! They learned the engineering process:  Discovering a problem, learning what they need to know in order to solve the problem, designing a solution, and making improvements to their solution in order to make their solution the best it can be!   We had to find a way that flowers can be pollinated in the event that bees become extinct! Students used various materials to engineer a pollinator that could transfer pollen from the flower to another location. Our "pollen" was baking soda. Enjoy the photos below!  You can watch the students expressions change as the scientist turns up the power on the "shake table" to test the marshmallow models students built. This was a highlight of the day I think!  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DRDYax-NmKNfdJZ5YZzahK
